Where has chocolate come from and who's idea was it to make into one of the most loved foods?
It was back in 1514 when the Aztec's were brewing a drink called 'Xocotlatl' made from roasted and ground cacao beans. The cacao beans first raised interest in the Spanish conquerors as a way of payment, so that is where the term "gold of the New World" comes from. Later came the interest in nutritional benefits of this plant.
It was the Spanish monks who first combined sugar and vanilla with the raw cacao to make a sweet drink, so we can see the techniques used centuries ago still remain in chocolate production today.
So, thats who we have to thank for this addiction of ours!
The name Kacao of course is a derivative of the cacao beans....
